Alumni Spotlight

UWC Malawi National Committee students are committed to making a difference, which happens in many ways.

Some have left UWC to pursue specialist training and education. Others have set up initiatives, charities and businesses based on projects they founded at UWC. Others have channelled their confidence and commitment into ideas that make a real difference to communities, or challenge injustice.

UWC helps every student understand that their ambitions are possible. And offers the support, guidance and a global network to make their ideas a reality.

For over 60 years, UWC graduates have experienced many different careers across a variety of sectors, world wide and contributed to their communities, creating initiatives that make a difference.

Pearson College UWC, 2017-2019

“On a grey January afternoon in 2017, I saw an ad from the UWC Malawi National Committee about a scholarship to study abroad on a page with a bright logo with the letters “UWC”. I attended Pearson College UWC in Canada from 2017 to 2019. Following this, I studied at the University of Oklahoma, where I earned my History Degree. After graduating in 2023, I worked full-time for a year before resuming my studies. I am now studying at Rutgers University for a Master’s Degree in Public History. I am forever grateful for the opportunity that UWC gave me, as it unquestionably changed the trajectory of my life. For any young Malawians thinking of applying, please do not doubt yourself. As Namadingo sang in one song, ‘khalani ndi mantha – gonjetsani’.” – Novahiwa Chafikana

Li Po Chun UWC, 2021-2023

“I attended UWC Li Po Chun College in Hong Kong from 2021 to 2023. After UWC, I am currently studying Computer Science and Quantitative Economics at St. Olaf College in Minnesota (Class of 2027). UWC had a lasting impact on my life, as it helped me open my mind to new cultures and not be afraid to be different. It has been the driving force that has helped me explore different ideologies, step out of my comfort zone, and challenge myself both academically and emotionally by living through experiences. I therefore urge you to take the chance and be a part of the UWC movement and participate in the journey of self-discovery and development.” – Ekarhi Maruwo

UWC Red Cross Nordic, 2021-2023

“I attended UWC Red Cross Nordic in Norway from 2021 to 2023. I am currently pursuing my bachelor’s degree at Luther College in the United States. UWC opened my mind to different ways of seeing the world and made me more curious about global issues. It taught me the importance of understanding others and working with people from different backgrounds. To future Malawian UWCers: Be yourself wherever you go. Embrace the diversity around you, get involved beyond the classroom, and be patient with yourself and others. Most importantly — enjoy your UWC journey!” – Eliza Kuyokwa
